For general description of this new system, please refer to our Year of the Phoenix blog. If you want to learn some basic concepts of matchmaking, here is our previous blog about matchmaking in Battlegrounds. When your star bonus multiplier is bigger than 1, or you are in Legend rank, you are generally in the first matchmaking pool; when your star bonus drops to 1, you are in the second pool. A: Since each player starts at the bottom of the ladder at start, we want fair matches for everyone aka. At that time, your progression on ladder is protected by your star bonus, thus your net expected gain will be positive through the ladder. Once other players run out of star bonuses, matching by rank will allow for good players, or players who want to push themselves a bit, to be able to progress to a higher rank. In short, having two matchmaking pools helps players progress in the ladder without having to grind as much, while still making most matches fair. At the start of the season we will recover your MMR to certain threshold if it is dropped below that value, which is based on what your rank is in the previous season.

One of Hearthstone’s most popular streamers has fought back against a pack of players who regularly sniped his games, Eurogamer’s competitive gaming sister site Metabomb reports. Octavian Morosan, better known to the Hearthstone community as Kripparrian, or Kripp, has frequently complained about players who stream-snipe – in other words those who watch his stream when playing against him to see his hand.
It’s an unfortunate part of the game but, as Kripp says in the video below, pretty much unavoidable. But then Kripp began matching repeatedly with the same players who not only had knowledge of what he was about to play, but who also used incredibly lucky – and perfectly suited – Arena decks in order to beat him. If Kripp played a deck with a weakness to a particular other deck, he would see that exact rival deck pop up, and someone with a similar-sounding screen name would be on the other end “sniper16”, “sniper24”, “sniper30”.
He began to suspect a group of players had built up a selection of strong Arena decks, ready to pounce with the right counter when he began matchmaking. In Hearthstone, you click on a button to have the game find a match for you.

In this post, I will go through the new system and what it means for players in detail. In the old system, the Hearthstone ladder consists of 25 new player ranks ranks , 25 regular ranks, and Legend. In order to advance through the ranks, you need to gain stars. You gain one star for a win and lose one star for a loss.
Below rank 20, you cannot lose stars. Below rank 5, you gain bonus stars for win streaks: every consecutive win starting from your third win in a row grants you two stars instead of one. There are rank floors that you cannot drop out of during a season. Ranks 20, 15, 10, 5, and Legend cannot be lost during a season.
